Favorite Cookbooks

As a student, I don't necessarily know where I'll end up yet. What job I'll have, where I'll live, etc. As a result, I've tried to avoid accumulating too many cookbooks since I may have to move when I finish my PhD. That said, I do have a few books, magazines and websites that I turn to again and again for inspiration when I'm looking for something interesting to cook.

Cookbooks

Lorraine Pascale

I have two of her books, both given to me as gifts by lovely friends: Fast, Fresh and Easy Food and Home Cooking Made Easy. After watching her cooking show last year, I found that I kept coming back to her recipes - especially for party foods or other nibbles. Particular favorites include: palmiers and bacon cheese twists.

Detox Health-Plan

This is my go to book when I'm trying to cut back on refined foods and be a bit healthier. It's a great source of recipes that have lots of great nutrients and tasty flavors, which help to remind me that just because something is good for you doesn't mean it has to taste terrible. My hands down favorite in this book has to be the Aubergine and mixed bean tagine.

Magazines

BBC Good Food & Olive

Both of these magazines are great sources of seasonal recipes, which is fantastic when trying to eat locally. I've tried lots of different food magazines since there are tons of them out there but these two are my hands down favorites. They have more recipes than the others and far fewer advertisements.

Websites

Smitten Kitchen

Who doesn't love Smitten Kitchen? She's such a great inspiration to someone like me who has a small kitchen and/or a lack of fancy machinery. I love the random search function on her page since I always end up with something that looks delicious. I don't think I can list my favorite recipes for this site because there are far too many of them.

Maangchi

I had never even though to attempt Korean food until I found this website. Her videos make everything look so easy that it's almost impossible to resist trying them. I'll definitely try out her emergency kimchi recipe at some point this year and other favorites were her dumplings (mandu) and bulgogi.

Homesick Texan

This website is such a great resource for Tex-Mex style recipes with added cheats for when you can't find more authentic ingredients. This has been an absolute lifesaver while I've been here in London. Lately I've noticed a lot of ingredients that used to be really hard to find have been appearing on my local supermarket shelves so while it's getting easier, it's still by no means simple. When I'm craving a taste of home (Tex-Mex is my favorite American style food), a quick look at this site and I've got something exciting to make.
